They were unaware at the time that the Plague was spread by fleas, that had fed on a rodent carrier. If they'd had that knowledge, they would have infected many more, but as it was, the powder on the doorknobs, etc., was not an effective means of infection..

I have read that essential oils,a combination of 4 , prevented transmission. Some theives had been robbing dead bodies and didn’t get sick. When they got arrested, they admitted the oils had kept them well. Thieves oil blend, very popular.
